When Teambuilding Doesn't Work
My companies management team recently decided to send a group of us on a a teambuilding exercise. The teambuilding exercise resulted in a couple of my colleagues resigning and one now facing disciplinary action.
Although attendance was not compulsory everyone signed up as they were worried that not going would be bad for their careers. They had planned a packed intinerary including archery, hiking, climbing and orienteering. But things began to quickly go downhill soon after our arrival.
There had clearly been a breakdown in communications as the details of what we were each required to bring along had not been provided to everybody. Many people had turned up without sleeping bags and some had even omitted to bring any proper outdoor clothes. This resulted in arguments between some of my colleagues and one group decided it was time to go to the pub for a liquid lunch.
The organizers had provided all of the essential camping equipment including optional tents, hammocks and tarpaulins, ideal for the hardier, experienced campers. I opted for the log cabin option as this was comfortably furnished with bunks.
When my workmates stumbled back from the bar they were very much the worse for drink. An orienteering exercise had been arranged for the afternoon that would take us out into the local woods. The organizers had set up a treasure hunt that would see us cover around 6 miles, following clues and instructions as we reached each checkpoint. Those who had just returned from their liquid lunch were clearly not up for hiking so they hid away in the woods, smoking and drinking whiskey.
When the evening rolled around it was time for us to cook our dinner over the camp fire. The ingredients for our supper consisted of several whole chickens, some potatoes and other vegetables along with some dried fruit and fruit juices. The menu was clearly not satisfactory for a few of my colleagues who immediately got on the phone to a local pizza delivery service. This prompted the organisers to call a meeting to remind everybody of what was expected of us while attending their campsite.
Thnings didn't improve as more alcohol was consumed and people became increasingly restless. The group who had chosen to go for a liquid lunch had missed the opportunity to choose bunks in the log cabin so they were expected to sleep in the tents. Several people were very unhappy with this arrangement and said that they would be going to a hotel. When the organisers pointed out that this was not in the spirit of the teambuilding exercise they became quite aggressive and one even threatened one of the organisers.
The result was that several people who were clearly unhappy with the exercises heading home early. Those of us who stuck around had a really excellent time but the organisers will not be inviting us back.
This sorry tale should serve to remind managers that you really need to be certain that you get the buy-in of everybody who attends a teambuilding exercise like this. Its really important to make certain that everybody knows what is expected of them and what is expected of the exercise.

Frequently Asked Questions...
Anyone know a good LED flashlight for camping?
I'm going on a camping trip next month and I want a powerful flashlight to bring with me. I looked at the Duracell Daylight LED Flashlight but I feel like the two AA batteries wont last long.
Answer:
Get a LED headlamp. they are light weight and the LED`s will last forever on anything from a single A battery to 3 AAA`s. I will never use a handheld flashlight ever again. Instead of holding the light in your mouth or under your armpit when rummaging through your gear or trying to cook or trying to get settled in your tent you`ll be hands free. You can also use the headstrap to hook it on the ceiling of your tent to set it up like a lantern. I`ve had my Princeton Tec Eos for about 6 years now. Its guaranteed for life, but I havent had a problem with it yet. Its waterproof upto 3 feet and takes 3 AAA batteries. They last quite a long time, and with 4 settings- superbright for hiking, medium to save the batteries around the campsite, dim perfect for map work or reading without blinding yourself and an emergency strobe. Below is the Princeton Tec Eos and two other leading headlamp brands.
