900 Lumen Cycle Headlight Scrutinised

So had have I and to prepare for the winter season (in May? you must be kidding ok, ok – I like to be organized:) I decided to purchase one of these bad boys and after couple of weeks or so ( the postage time is slow, but for free!) the packet has arrived!

This light has been rumored around for a while – the ‘Chinese light’, ‘the Magic Shine 900 Lumen Bright Light‘ or ‘the really bright light you can get for £50 direct from China’ – yes, especially if you into night bike riding, you may have heard about it!

Now the facts:
The cost including shipping is at current exchange rate about £52. The build quality is spot on, I was rather impressed, I was not expecting so well machined headlamp for £50. Battery life approx. 3h on the 900 Lumen setting. So far so good. Fitting via fat rubber ring to your bars- you get two sizes of bands (for 26mm or 31.8mm bars). The beam is wide enough for single track use, if you picky there is bit of a hot spot in the middle, but remember you are paying only £50. Five modes gives you ideal spread of battery life management. The use is pretty easy – big illuminated button on the back of the headlamp, plus by it color you now how is your battery doing. The size and weight are very compact the headlamp is about 5cm across and the battery pack about 7x3x3cm and the weight 0.65 kg (23oz) for the whole package.
The only down side id now helmet mount but I guess you better with something like an little torch as the the head lamp is bit weighty.

And my bottomline is….
There are lots of high output and quality lights manufactures out there – HOPE, LUPINE, CATEYE, NIGHT RIDER, USE and many others, but to get the MAGIC SHINE light output and battery life you will have to pay at least £200 or more likely £300 and you can get four of these for that. It’s simples – value, quality, power = £50 well spend.
