Female Betta Fish Sorority Tank
Where To Begin
The first thing you need to do to start setting up a female betta fish sorority tank is to have a concept of how many female betta fish, or hens, you want in your sorority and at least an approximation of what you'd like the tank to appear like when you're finished. This will help determine what size tank you will want. But first, you need to ensure that, once you add in your collection of female betta fish, they have all the support systems already in place that they will need to prosper. Believe me, it is much easier to take your time and do it right instead of cutting corners and, at best, trying to fix mistakes in mid-stream (yes, pun intended), or at worst, ending up with heartbreaking disasters.
Some of the components can be spendy, but each one is just as significant as the next, so it can take some time to gather all of the necessary pieces, depending on your budget. Below is a list of the hardware you'll need to start up your female betta fish planted sorority tank:
- Aquarium, glass or acrylic construction, of appropriate size and style

- Canister filters, bio-media and carbon filter
- Spray bar kit
- Fluval intake cover sponge

- Light Strip outfitted with "grow" lights for plants, either LED, fluorescent or compact fluorescent. If the light isn't part of a hood, or aquarium cover, then you'll need:
- A Glass top cover
- Heater with adjustable settings capable of heating the aquarium you've chosen
- Digital thermometer with min./max temperature alarms
- Power strip with surge protector
- Digital or mechanical light timer
- Magnetic algae scrubber

This is emphatically one of those projects that will require a lot of forethought and planning. Besides for picturing what you'd like in your mind's eye, do a few sketches and certainly take the time to get a tape measure out and check the tank's future space, plus take note of how far away the nearest electrical outlets are. If you're able to take some time beforehand researching and shopping around, you can generally get the merchandise you want and save yourself a few bucks with store sales or online promotions. The more time you spend planning and stocking up on the parts that will make up the infrastructure of this future planed tank, the less time you'll have to spend later on emergency runs across town to track down parts and pieces in the middle of your undertaking.
Once you've made up your mind about the size and style of aquarium you'll need, make it your first purchase, then store it away someplace safe until you are ready. Physically having your aquarium will help you in purchasing all the subsequent parts. You'll have all the specs and will be able to do test fits, modifications or other adjustments in advance. This prevents potential catastrophes, like planning your whole setup around an aquarium that, when you go to buy it, is out of stock or, even worse, discontinued.
