How do I spend energy with my portable heater?
I bought a heater for my room and I keep it at 1300 Watts. It has termostate that turns on and off the fan when it reaches the temperature I set. My question is: I didn't set the maximum, so, do I still spend the whole 1300 watts? Or is it proportionally to the the level I keep it?
Thanks Frank. Very enlightning!
Answer:
It uses 1300 watts (plus the amount the fan uses) when it is on. It won't be on all the time because of the thermostat, so when it is off it won't use any energy, and when it is on it will use 1300 watts (plus the amount the fan uses- probably 20 watts).
1300 watts is 1.3 kilowatts. If you use 1.3 kilowatts for an hour, that is 1.3 kilowatt hours. If you use 1.3 kilowatts for two hours, that is 1.3 kilowatt hours (1.3 x 2).
Check your energy bill for how much you pay per kilowatt hour. I pay about ten cents per kilowatt hour.
The time adds up. If you use 1.3 kilowatts for half an hour now and half an hour later, that is a total of an hour, making your energy use 1.3 kilowatt hours (1.3 x 1), which would cost about 10 cents where I live.
