Learning About The Many Kinds Of Camps
Camps. Have you ever noticed how many different meanings one word can have? For example, there is the military training camp, a boot camp and even a training camp. Or perhaps the word reminds you of times where you used to play cowboys in the neighborhood and pretended to sit around a campfire. It may even remind you of some of the great times you and your family had when you went camping at some remote lake.
The purpose for setting up a camp can be for different reasons also. Some may be done strictly for pleasure, like summer camp or camping with the family. There are also some that are for training purposes, much like a military boot camp, and sometimes it is necessary to camp in certain areas to carry on research.
Perhaps the best one of all, as far as kids are concerned, would be the summer camps. There are many different ones and there is bound to be one in your area that your child would thoroughly enjoy. Many times parents think their child is too young to go to camp, when in reality, young children (ages 6 to 10) usually have an easier time adjusting. These camps don't usually involve sleeping in a tent either. Shared cabins with kids their own age, days filled with hiking and water activities, crafts, lots of fresh air and good food, and campfire gatherings in the evening, all lend to the atmosphere of a summer camp experience that will make memories to last a lifetime.
If you have a child with a specific interest or hobby, then many summer camp programs include a specialty camp. If your child enjoys tennis, then a tennis camp may be perfect. There are computer camps for the techie in your family, or perhaps an art camp for your budding Picasso. Of course, depending on the child's age there will other options available to you. There are also programs available for children with special needs. These types of programs can really be something special for your child and can give them a great sense of accomplishment.
Before sending your child off to summer camp, be sure to check it out thoroughly. This includes phone conversations, emails and face-to-face meetings if possible. Check out all the camps that you feel would be appropriate. The American Camp Association recommends that the director has a bachelor's degree, in-service training within the last three years, and 16 weeks of administrative experience before assuming the responsibilities. Try to go there while camp is in session so that you can see for yourself if it is an acceptable place, as well as watching the kids and satisfying yourself that this is the right place for your little, happy camper.
Instead of chestnuts roasting on an open fire, it should be marshmallows roasting on an open fire. Camping is an activity quite like any other. The serene quality of being out in nature is one that thousands of people take part in when the weather gets warmer. The tents become unfurled and sleeping bags make their way out of storage. At what age can I take my children camping?
That depends on the weather and what type of activities you will want to do while you are out in the wilderness. Small infants do not need to be taken outdoors during inclement weather. You will need to plan out your vacation with children in mind. What activities will be enjoyed by the entire family? Are there things that will keep them busy while you are camping and relaxing? Just remember that children have short attention spans and not as much stamina as you do so take that into account before you start off on a five mile hike through the woods.

The best way to keep animals out of your food stuffs is to keep it in your car if you are in a campground. If you are the enthusiast who likes to hike into the woods away from everyone you will want to tie your food stuff out of reach so small animals, and even big ones, can not reach the food. Keeping a campfire going will also discourage animals from getting into your food supplies. Always keep scraps and other food wastes buried or far away from camp to discourage them as well.
What are some typical foods that are eaten while camping?
Who could possibly not go camping and not have hot dogs and marshmallows roasted over an open fire? It is just tradition to have those two staples. Other food items will depend on what type of camping you are doing. Many people love to catch their own food and roast them on the fire. Fish is an excellent food source and if you are near a river or stream it is a great way to hunt for your food. No matter what food you take, you will swear it is much better outside than if you were to cook it at home.
How much do tents cost?
Small tents average around thirty dollars. The larger, more sophisticated tents can cost hundreds of dollars depending on the type and brand you buy. There are also tents that are designed to be shades from the sun and will be where you set up your table. If you purchase one of these awnings, make sure it comes with mosquito netting to keep those pesky blood suckers away from your delicate skin. Any outdoor sporting store will have a variety of tents for you to choose from.
