How can I tell if a magnesium fire starter is a nock-off?
I know that the real good ones are made by Doan, but other than that, what is wrong with the knock offs? What makes them so much worse?

as long as it says magnesium on it , it will work!
I have never been aware of knock offs as long as it reads the above! use the back of a sturdy knife,usually works better than the 1 that comes with it! you get bigger ,better sparks
make sure to keep it dry! I have seen some for $2.99-$3.99,but not sure where,seems like ozark trail brand from wal-mart,not positive on that though!
